Gas prices. Can't Post

Why is everyone bitching about gas prices and demanding something be done? Is anyone else sick of the bitching?

You have to ask?

Is anyone else sick of the bitching?

Yes

Bitching is what people do, usually in search of like minded bitches. But there are those who like to bitch so much that they are perfectly willing to practice their art regardless of the level of agreement and there are some bitches who actively seek out the counter bitches just to give themselves a forum for the continuation of their own bitching.

Scrape up enough to buy a car and to actually run it too - then you won't care.

People complain about $4 gas but have no problem buying a $30,000 car.

Complaining is contagious and fueled by the media. If gas was at $3.80 and stayed there for a few years, we wouldn't even notice but as soon as it gets to $4, that's all you hear about.

Then politicians jump in and offer gas tax holidays, saving a whopping $0.18/gallon and the hype continues.

I love it when gas goes up. If I were back in the U.S, I would be saving over $4/gallon by riding a bike.

I am picking up my rental car tomorrow to go to France and I am expecting $10/gallon or pretty darn close to that!

I've never been to Europe, but from reading in a variety of auto forums (many members are from Europe) I can't figure out how people over "there" manage to even HAVE cars...between all the taxes and fees...it's truly amazing. We should consider ourselves lucky.

Nobody owns cars because there is no place to park them. Seriously, they seem to be mostly small, high kilometer, diesel, manual transmission, zippy machines that don't need much parking space.

Tibbs,

It's clear from the man-in-the-street interviews, the language that is being used etc . . that many people really don't understand the economic, geopolitical and geophyisical forces that are at work here. Many seem to really think that someone can do something about this and this may be temporary, when the reality is the forces are HUGE and revolutionary, and there is a very strong possiblity that the prices are never going to go lower, in fact they may just keep going up!!

In other words - get used to it! What it really points to is how poorly prepared just about all of North America is at just about all levels to deal with this. Big changes need to be made, but it's going to take a very long time to render that change and my guess is that there is going to be a lot of pain.

I had a pick up during the good old days of 3.50 a gallon so I myself said "ouch" when filling her up but understood how economics and the real world work.

My only real concern about gas prices is that car makers are going to start a mpg war, instead of the more fun HP war we've been having :)

All of one or the other is bad....balance is good.

I just filled up my mother-in-law's car here in France, a small Renault Cleo and for 44 liters I spend a nice 70 euros. So I have no bitching to do about fuel prices in North America! Lets just get used to higher fuel prices ...

That needs some translation for the metric and Euro challenged folks:

44 liters: 11.6 gal
70 Euro: 109 USD

So cost of gas in France: 9.4 USD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yes, but the majority of that is tax. that tax finances all of the goodies the french citizens get that we don't here in the U.S. (healthcare, unemployment, socialist crap, inequality 'fixers', etc etc).

Well, we have a similar tax structure in Canada and it seems to be working well up here. Governments have been recording surpluses and paying down Debt, while at the same time maintaining those core "socialist crap" programs of which you speak - healthcare, education, child care etc . . . Housing prices continue to go up, Unemployment is at a 30 year low. Canada has been the best performing per-captia member of the G8 for several years now. I seem to recall reading an article in the Econmist a while back that advocated higher taxes for the U.S. as it compared the U.S. to many other countries around the world who were actually outperforming the US on a percaptia basis( Canada being one of those countries) and had higher taxes.

It's reached the point in Canada, that no matter what political party you hail from, or where you are on the politcal spectrum, balancing your budget and fiscal responsibility are very high on voters list of things that are important to them. In fact, you could not get elected anywhere in Canada these days, running on a platform that advocated running a deficit!

record low unemployment, rising housing prices, [different types of] surpluses....all due to the resource based nature of the Canadian economy. simple as that.

Part of it but not the reason for all of it.

Canada spends how much on defense of the world as a % of GDP - a little over 1% and trending down since 1990. We are at 3%. That would be nice.
