GWB/ Bob Costas Can't Post

Not sure if anyone saw Costas asking GWB some questions, political and Olympic, but I was again struck by how good Bush can be in less formal settings.

Did he just tell the president "you are dismissed" ?

I agree. It is really easy to paint him as an idiot because he obviously is not a linguistic genius. But I think when you get him in a one-to-one situation, or when you get him talking about something he is passionate about he is a very effective communicator (although I still wouldn't call him a linguist).

Yes. The entire exchange went like this:

Bob: "So, Mr. President, are you going to be taking in any more of the events?"

Pres. Bush: "Yeah, if you ever let me off of this set. (chuckle, chuckle)"

Bob: "OK, sir, you are dismissed."

Or something like that.

Once again confirming that Bob Costas is a complete ass.

If McCain picks Bob Costas as his running mate, I will vote for Obama twice.

Now that is funny. Well done, sir.

Just one of many reasons I'd rather waste my time here than watch NBC's prime time coverage of the Olympics. Bleah.

I just felt that Costas did not show enough "respect" for the President - a tad too flippant for me.

Definitely one of those comments I'm sure he wishes he could have back, although I don't think it was that bad. I do agree that GW sounded uhhh pretty good.

GWB doesn't inspire a whole lot of respect from most people.

We must have been watching a different interview. I thought he sounded OK relative to my usual expectations, but he still came off pretty dense. I even laughed a couple of times at his fumbling for words and stretching for answers.

Having said that, I didn't think that he was bad, but certainly nothing worthy of being "struck by how good Bush can be." Likeable? Sure. Knolwledge, intelligence, and leadership? No...not really.

Unbelievable.

LOL.

Why am I not surprised?! It couldn't be that you're looking for things at which to pick, rather than listening to the actual content, could it? Nah......

I figured I'd hear exactly this. I could just as easily state that our resident conservatives are looking for things to be impressed by. Trust me Dave, as someone who has voted for more Republicans than I have Democrats and as someone who listens to to just as many conservative pundits as I do liberals, I continually give this guys chances to impress me. About the only compliment I can give him is the fact that he does come across as a very likeable person.

Bush has always been very likeable which was why he got elected in the the first AND the second place. But I'm sorry, likeability just isn't good enough. Regarding "content," I agreed with most (if not all) of what he said. What's that got to do with "sounding good in a less formal forum?" He gave standard answers that were dished out to him by his advisors.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is by what standard are you comparing him to from which to be impressed other than comparing him to what he normaly sounds like, which frankly isn't setting the bar very high. I mean seriously, you guys might as well be saying, "See! He doesn't ALWAYS sound like a dumbass."

I'm not a big fan of GW Bush (for reasons much different than yours, I dare say), but I've never thought that he sounded like a dumbass. I just always find it supremely arrogant if someone, anyone, says that they don't see the qualities of "knowledge, intelligence, or leadership, in the President of the United States. It really makes we wonder about their personal perspective...... As terrible as he was as president, I wouldn't even question those characteristics in, God help us all, Jimmy Carter.

I think he did a better job at answering questions from Costas than Obama did when a 7 year old girl asked him why he wanted to be President.

You would think that for most people (US citizens), respect for the office would be automatic. Although I would not like to see BO become president, I would never question those traits in him which you point out.

You won't be the first to call me arrogant, but as for my perspective I work in an engineering firm that contracts to the DoD. I would expect our President to come off at least as good as your average Major or Lt. Col. in the army of marines. He does not. In fact, would consider his presense to be below average for anyone over 35 years old in a typical company meeting.

I can personaly go back as far as Dwight D. Eisenhour when looking at videos and I can honestly say that there is not a single other president I could say that about.

So, again, I'm curious exactly what standard you hold him to to be "impressed."

That's because you're basing your decision on which candidate to vote for on your objective, reasoned analysis of which best supports the positions that you personally value.

Most (not all) BO supporters can't say the same.

I'm no fan of GWB, but that would be rude to say to anyone. Maybe Costas should have just thanked him for his time.

Exactly, and if he were to become President and I happened to meet him in person, I would consider it a thrill of a lifetime, despite my staunch opposition to his policies and ideologies. From my perspective it's best to never "love to hate."

So you thought he sounded intelligent when he butchered Medvedev (He said Medvediev or some such incoherent mumble)? I guess he was smart enough to not try it again, so he just refers to him as the Russian President for the rest of the interview.

All in all, he wasn't terrible though and I agreed with his philosophy on Chinese relations, though I could have done with a little less pandering to the religious right.

Re: GWB/ Bob Costas [saltman] [In reply to] Can't Post

Bush was great when he was talking sports. A real guy's guy. He knew all the athletes and all their stats. Then he completely mauled the Russian President's name by adding half a dozen unnecessary vowels and we immediately understood where his priorities lie and what section of the paper he reads first in the morning....oh wait, never mind, he doesn't read newspapers.

5 more months! thats all we have to endure!!
