Debate Thread

Okay, partisan hat off. Impartial reporter hat on.
Obama starts with the "worst financial crisis since the Great Depression" line. McCain call it that, too. Tries to tie it to McCain. Good tactic. "Failed 8 years," and such.
A recitation of fixes. Let's see what develops.

McCain comes back with that line about "shipping 700 billion to countries who don't like us." Been there, heard that before. I'm not sure it'll assuage retiree fears, either.
Okay, something about renegotiating bad home loans for folks who got sucked in. Stabilization of home values. Both seem to be playing a little to the populist vote.

Brokaw has caught McCain a bit off guard with his question about who he'd appoint to head Treasury if he becomes President. Now he's naming a few folks. Meg Whitman, CEO of Ebay, and a big McCain supporter. Was she a housewife at one time?
He's talking about greed, excess and cronyism in D.C.
Obama comes back with Warren Buffet. But says the key is making sure it's not enough just to help those at the top. Hits on the "we've got to support the Middle Class." Tries to bring in the "McCain says the fundamentals of the economy are sound" thing.

Obama, middle class America cannot save not because they're taxed too much...it's because they spend too much.

Brokaw slaps both for exceeding time limits. Next question, "what it is in the bailout is going to help us out." McCain says "call it a rescue, not a bailout." Makes a mistake (I think) in talking about how he went back to D.C. to deal with the crisis.
Tries to tar Obama with the Fannie Mae mess.

McCain ends with a "some here told regulators to take a hike." A direct slap at Obama. Not to juicy yet. I'll be back in a few.
This is too wonky for my taste. Ouch!! Barack comes back with an attack on McCain's lack of effort on Fannie, etc. Calls McCain "a deregulator." Says McCain was a latecomer to attempts to regulate Fannie Mae and brings in Rick Davis. Tries to steer it back to how he can help fix the crisis, not fix the blame.

Obama's tagging onto McCain's "help ordinary families stay in their homes" thing. Brokaw's been good, so far. Not too much difference in either candidate's plan for how they'll help keep families in their homes.
McCain says Obama's name was never on that letter of concern McCain et al sent warning of the coming mess.

Theresa Finch asks "how can we trust either of you (and their parties) to get us out of this mess when you both got us into this crisis?"
Now Obama brings in Bush and the current 500 billion dollar deficit. He'll try to tie McCain to this. Says "nobody's completely innocent here, but..." I'm not sure he's answered the question yet, but he's trying.

Ugh. McCain counters with the "I've been a consistent reformer" line. Works across the aisle, record of bipartisanship. Just an attack on Obama, but no specific fix for the mess we're in. Trying to make Obama's record the basis for why he can't be trusted and McCain can.
Calls Obama the biggest spending liberal in the Senate.

Don't know. This is the biggest issue right now on the American mind so maybe it was not such a bad move..

McCain initially confused by the Brokaw 3-tier question. Gets on track with another recipe-style recitation. Goes back to that 700 billion dollar sent overseas thing.

I thought this was supposed to be McCain's preferred debate format?? He's blabbering on like an idiot (more so than usual).
I'm so disgusted with both candidates and parties, I'm not sure why I'm still watching this crap.

Agreed. They are both trying too hard to incorporate their stump speeches.

Brokaw reminds them both of the need to stay in the one-minute response limit. Obama and McCain are both tying in the energy issue to national security. I think McCain tried to bring that in in order to highlight his experience in this arena and Obama's supposed lack.
Obama comes back with a decent response. Now he attacks back with a let's look at our records line. Says he'll go through the budget line-by-line, then wants to look at where some of our tax revenues are going.
Says McCain wants to give tax breaks to oil companies. That plays well with the middle class.
Brokaw reminds them ONCE AGAIN to stay in the time limit.
Brokaw reads a question off the Internet. "What sacrifices will you ask the American people to make to get us back to greatness again." From a child of the Depression.
