Cooking with applesauce -- how? Can't Post

Okay, so the idea of cooking with applesauce as a substitute for oil in the frying pan isn't new. I've done it before. But, maybe I'm not doing something right, which seems hard to imagine, because how hard can it be...?

Maybe I'm not keeping the heat low enough, or maybe it's just the nature of how it cooks... for example, I am cooking sweet potatoes in the frying pan right now. I poured in the applesauce; added the potatoe slices. The applesauce is now burnt and sticking to the pan, but the potatoes still have a bit more to cook.

Anyone have good success with using applesauce for cooking?

Hmmmm....I've never heard that you could substitute apple sauce for oil when frying. I've only heard that you could use it when baking. For example, if you're making banana bread, you can substitute half the butter in the recipe with apple sauce. I can't imagine it would work when frying, but maybe I'm missing something.

I just use a non-stick pan and a little olive oil.

I thought that applesauce was used as a vegetable oil substitute as a baking ingredient. I don't think you will get good results by trying to substitute oil with applesauce when you need to fry something. It just doesn't work that way.

Ha! Maybe I've had it screwed up all along! LOL. Well, I have been using it as a frying substitute. I think it should work better with low heat, but I had it up kinda high earlier. Gave the sweet potatoes a nice taste though...

At high heat, the sugar in the applesauce will carmalize. You can't really fry with it. I guess you can cook with it, but its not actually frying.

Never heard of using it like that......

My daughter is allergic to eggs. We substitute applesauce for eggs in baking and it works great. The ratio is 1 Tb applesauce for each egg.

Their is a German dish , red cabbage and apple sauce ,, cooked down to a nice side dish .


" baking has the largest window for error , 10 minutes either way still eatable."

Instead of 1.5 cups of Vegetable oil, use 1 cup oil and 1/2 cup applesauce (or, blend 1 apple, that'll do the trick). . .

Best dessert I've ever made. . .
