Chicago Tribune accuses V of taking shots at Obama
Can't Post
Bwaaaaaahaaaaaaahaaaaaa!
Are you serious??? Do these guys NOT know that this is a re-make of an 80s sci-fi series?
Sheesh!
From the article:
Imagine this. At a time of political turmoil, a charismatic, telegenic new leader arrives virtually out of nowhere. He offers a message of hope and reconciliation based on compromise and promises to marshal technology for a better future that will include universal health care.
The news media swoons in admiration -- one simpering anchorman even shouts at a reporter who asks a tough question: "Why don't you show some respect?!" The public is likewise smitten, except for a few nut cases who circulate batty rumors on the Internet about the leader's origins and intentions. The leader, undismayed, offers assurances that are soothing, if also just a tiny bit condescending: "Embracing change is never easy."
So, does that sound like anyone you know? Oh, wait -- did I mention the leader is secretly a totalitarian space lizard who's come here to eat us?

This is pretty weak "reporting." As one who voted for Obama, I'm embarrassed for the extreme and absurd lengths at which his apologists will go to search for a slight against him.
Sigh.

Hopefully, the writer was just being somewhat ironic.

So you think it's impossible that the writers/producers/directors of V are using it as tool for social criticism?

This project has been in the works for over 2 years. It started well before Obamamania and is based on a prior sci-fi flick with the same plot. Also, it is being run by ABC, not FOX, so, yeah, I am saying that.

So, were the episodes shot and written before the Obama campaign? Is the new version a word-for-word copy of the original show? I seriously don't know the answer to either question. Regardless, I'm not sure it matters. The fact that it is 20 years old seems to me a pretty week argument as surely you can agree that a remake of say, Animal Farm, done in 2005 could have been a not so subtle critique of the Bush administration, right?
Either way I haven't seen it, nor am I likely to watch it, so I have no clue if the article is way off base, but it certainly seems within the realm of possibility that the creators of the new show had some sense of how the themes of the show may resonate with certain audiences and the conclusions that those audiences might draw from those themes. And I think that's perfectly legitimate.

One can only hope. The irony certainly didn't drip from the words.

I think it is perfectly legit as well. Given that this is ABC, I hope you are correct. NBC has supposedly ok'ed open criticism of the current Administration ala SNL. FOX has never hesitated. CBS (the Communist Broadcasting System) will likely never allow it. If ABC gave the green light to take open (or even subtle) shots at the Administration, I applaud. Now, if only the "news media" would follow suit ...
IMO, the article is merely demontrating the ever-growing trend of Obama apologists that seem to be growing by the day.

That's what I don't understand. How does this article demonstrate that? If we can agree that there is a possibility that the creators may intend the program to be a "barbed commentary on Obamamania" (not necessarily Obama) and that it will "delight [Obama's] detractors," then I don't see how this article is anything but reasonable critique of a new TV show (exactly as it was meant to be). In other words, I think you are looking for something that isn't there, which seems ironic in this case.

Just read the tone of the article and consider the source. The knee-jerk defensive reaction before a single episode has even aired is classic.

Take a look at the YouTube Video of the original miniseries at the 1:08 mark:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDoBQ0NuUbM
"To the Heroism of the Resistance Fighters -past, present, future- this work is respectfully dedicated"
When this thing first aired, we were still in a Cold War with the Soviet Union, and I believe that they just invaded Afghanistan (correct me if I'm wrong).
As for today's series, my take is that there is a small and growing group of people in America enraged at BOTH Republicans and Democrats for selling us out to the banks on Wall Street and that they feel that they might have to administer justice themselves to take their country back. Does this movie reflect on this? I'm not sure, but I'm definitely watching for signs of it in tonight's episode.

The Soviets invaded Afghanistan on December 24th, 1979. Certainly, the original series was somewhat metaphorical and played on the broader themes of Soviet expansionism throughout Eastern Europe and down into Afghanistan and the old Soviet-dominated Muslim nations and regions.

The original series was pretty much a direct play on the Nazis, not the Soviets. With the uniforms, the youth supoort groups, and even the symbol used by the Visitors (which is a couple strokes short of a Swastika), the original author has commented on the Nazis and French resistance groups as his inspiration for the series.

Where you been guy? Anyway, I like the Soviet analogy (mainly because they were the bad guys when I was in) better but it's just as apropo for the Nazis, certainly. I was stationed out in SD and back in town when it came out and we watched it on the big screen up in the Acey-Duecy lounge at the Gator Gardens. Big crowds every night it was on.

I'm sure you can make it fit for any oppresive regime. I just know that, from interviews, the original creator said he was aiming at the Nazis.

7th Fleet for some planning conferences.

Of course you're right. I just like the evil Soviet communist analogy.
And you know me too well.
As far as the 7th Fleet thing I hope it went well. Something for Team Spirit or RimPac?
