Character Can't Post

It's always an issue, and one of the main things Obama is running on. Which of the two candidates has shown "better" character, and what have they done that leads you to the choice?

Re: Character [dave_w] [In reply to] Can't Post

If I may, let me augment your questions:

Character is critical to determining how a leader will respond to crisis. Will he reach deep within himself and in the traditions that shaped him and find the courage and grace to inspire strength and greatness? Will soldiers trust the wisdom and integrity of his decision when he orders them to war? Will he truly understand the terrible toll of war, as well as the price of appeasement? Will he make decisions based on considerations greater than cheap political expediency?
Now, ask yourself: which candidate has repeatedly demonstrated that kind of character?

it's one of the main things both candidates are running on. and, honestly, they both pass the character test. any fairminded person would conclude that. those who value partisanship over fairmindedness will conclude otherwise.

Normally, I agree with most of what you say, but, oh please! Slick Willie sent my unit into Kosovo and Dubya sent my unit into Iraq. We followed both of them and never questioned either. I understand the point you are making and agree with every other question you posed but this one.

I sat in a frick'n tent in the middle of the frick'n desert while you clowns back here spent days looking at hanging chads. Our day and our duty would not have altered one bit based on the outcome.

I think the question highlights an important ideal for a Commander in Chief. As ideals go rarely is reality a match. Both Clinton and Bush fell far short of this ideal but I hope for better in the future.

I know McCain has his flaws, but for me Obama's character took a real kick in the teeth with his public funding flip-flop. Plain and simple he went back on his word.

I doubt that anyone running for President has much character. Because the first thing you do is sell your soul to the lobbyists to raise the jack needed to campaign. I once read where McCain said that lobbyist money never influenced him. That's a scary quote because if he believes it he's delusional.

"Obama for President."

The premise is a non-starter. Each candidate has significant and legitimate baggage that can be tied directly to their character, which will be the ultimate focus of such a dialogue here. Shall we hurl charges until we reach a consensus that both are unfit to lead?

IMO, when they do make mistakes or misspeak, how they handle those situations, how they correct the issue or acknowledge blame shows character. Both candidates have shown good character from what i've seen. I don't believe this will be a deciding factor for me.

And McCain has never gone back on his word? never flipped on a promise? never flopped on a policy? what about a solemn vow? ...like the one he took with the first Mrs. McCain for example.

To me the most troubling thing about McCain's character, or lack of it, is the fact that he has a known criminal, Karl Rove, running his campaign. Rove is the man who mercilessly smeared John McCAin 8 years ago, calling him unfit for office because his time in that POW camp had made him crazy. Rove is the man who spread rumors that McCain had fathered a black baby. If McCain had any character he wouldn't let that scumbag Rove, the man who atttacked his family, his wife and child, within an asses roar of his campaign let alone call the shots.

If John McCain had the character necessary to be President he'd tell Karl Rove to go to hell.

If character is important lets turn the microscope on John McCain. He has dated strippers, he was a heavy drinker

As a former dater of strippers and a current heavy drinker (on occassions), I'm deeply offended that you think I have no character.

That's what the "has his flaws" caveat was for. I think sphere has it right. It would take about 4 minutes of character examination to determine they are both unfit to lead.

As I said, always an issue for us as voters, but Obama's campaign has gone an extra step of frequently citing it as a major Obama strength, so it bears a closer look, because apparantly they want us to look closely and then vote for him partially on that basis. Even Clark, in the Shieffer interview intoned with such:

GENERAL WESLEY CLARK: But Barack is not, he is not running on the fact that he has made these national security pronouncements. He's running on his other strengths. He's running on the strengths of character, on the strengths of his communication skills, on the strengths of his judgment. And those are qualities that we seek in our national leadership.
