Sorry but I need to be told what to believe and who I should hate and what meat to eat and when to eat it.

Here was a similar campaign on this side of the Atlantic:
and refreshing to see it was in the US as well - Washington, DC
"Why believe in a god?"
.
Why tip-toe though life only to arrive safely at death's door?

Curious. They choose a quote and then do precisely the opposite. The money they spent on those ads help no one. They likely hurt quite a few. One has to ask why?

I especially like the fact that the ad says "There's
probably
no God......" Is that what's known as covering your ass, just in case?!
It also seems as if Ms Hepburn doesn't know the difference between atheism and agnosticism! ;-)
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."

Is this one of those odd moments where atheism = religion?

Of course, the word "probably" wasn't in the Hepburn quote. Although Hepburn identifies herself as an atheist, the ad itself doesn't necessarily seem to be atheistic in intent.

On the contrary! What could be more benevolent then seeking to save someone's soul from a lifetime of unnecessary worrying?

I don't know, I think it would have helped me. If I had seen one when I was 8 it would have saved me a couple of years of trying to figure out why I was the only one that didn't believe. I don't think I knew there were atheists until I saw one on an episode of All in the Family.

this video is also interesting, I wonder if it's related to the same campaign (it's called 'an instruction maual for life')

Although not relevant in the US or England, there are people in the world who literally starve to death every day. Pardon me if I don't get too worked up about whether or not a few healthy Brits or Yanks have their faith challeged or their doubts validated.

The starving people in China argument never gets old.
Personally I like the fark.com comment on this:
Quote:
British Atheists raise enough money to put anti-God statements on 800 more buses, which will no doubt convert as many people as "Jesus is my co-pilot" bumper stickers do

Thank God you are comfortable enough and insulated enough from the rest of the world that you can make this comment. Remarkable.

Casey is the only Christian on this forum who can hold that position without being hypocritical. Get over yourself. Your religion spends 100s of millions of dollars a year in advertising.

I was really referring to her (Hepburn) identifying herself as an atheist but then stating her belief the "there's nothing that we can know......" That strikes me as more of an agnostic perspective than atheistic.

I wonder what the outrage would be if it said, "there is no Allah or 72 virgins, quit blowing up people and get on with your life"!!!

It reminds me of the anti-fraternity people in school who said they were members of Gamma Delta Iota!

Granted, the "nothing we can know" part of the quotation is at best ambiguous. Although I find Hepburn more perceptive than most, basing one's beliefs on the proclamations of Hollywood stars is always a hazardous practice. :)

Who did they hurt by placing these ads?

How little you know about me.
I do not approve of that spending and certainly do not tout its unproven "success."

I've always asked the same question when I see billboard signs like "Jesus is lord over (Enter city here)". What's the point? Couldn't the church or organization used the money in a far more productive manner?
