" Good article that sums up my feelings on the subject of a war with Iran.
http://www.nybooks.com/articles/21592[/reply]
" Interesting, if myopic. The author speaks only of "American demands to give up uranium enrichment", never mentioning that the demands are from the international community. The author also wonders at why we would think that Iran would be any less responsible with the nukes than those countries that already have them, never mentioning the ongoing Ahmadinejad threats to the very existence of the Israeli state. He then argues against the very idea of keeping the military option open, never admitting the value of such in dealing not only with Iran, but in encouraging more tough non-military efforts from the international community. Much of what he says makes sense, and sounds true, but given the oversights, his argument is obviously from one side and he loses credibility (with me) as a "balanced" source. I'm sure he's aware of the things he failed to include, which makes it either partisan or just an intellectually dishonest piece.

Iran is a country with 70 million people and about three times the size of Texas. It would take a lot of boots on the ground to try to control it.
Boots? no boots needed it can all be done from 30,000 ft and from 200 miles out to sea.Turn the area into a giant glass sculpture if need be.
What is interesting about Iran - totally unlike with Iraq or Afghanistan, it's only the USA (and maybe Israel) that has ever mentioned going to war with Iran. If it were to happen there would be no Tony Blair's or NATO countries lining up to follow the USA in to battle.
We could do ''it '' on our own and that is the point and Iran knows it.
The US would be going it alone on this one, so that's yet another reason why it's highly unlikely to happen
I dont think it will happen but people need to wake up to the real danger to the region and the world as Iran pieces together a real nuke bomb. They are moving right along with help from China and the U.S.S.R. oh sorry Russia.
I'am glad to see some progress from the Euro folks in economic pressure on Iran cutting them off.I say shut them down in the wallet anyway you can.Too bad some people will suffer in Iran but it has to be done so the rest of the free world can sleep at night.

Here's a link to the article that has generated all the buzz:
http://www.newyorker.com/.../080707fa_fact_hersh
What's relevant is that attacking Iran has no support in the U.S. military. Once again Cheney is the main proponent. It's also interesting that the article is weak on any substance in support of the sensationalized title. Most important, the current regime in Iran lacks support and is certain to be replaced in the short term. If we exercise patience we will achieve our goals without firing a shot. Attacking Iran would be a catastrophic failure.

Bingo.
So what is it that Cheney knows that the military just doesn't understand. :-)

it's a fight we could not win, and even Bush and Cheney aren't so stupid and arrogant to not see that.
You don't really believe that do you?

This part has me very concerned, if it's true:
" President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have rejected findings from U.S. intelligence agencies that Iran has halted a clandestine effort to build a nuclear bomb and "do not want to leave Iran in place with a nuclear program," Hersh said. "
That would indicate to me that they're hell-bent on war with Iran before their terms in office are over. I would like to know the source of their information, if not our own intelligence agencies. Mossad? I sure hope that statement was incorrect.
War with Iraq and Afganistan will be nothing compared to war with Iran. They have a much greater population and haven't suffered under sanctions like the Iraqis had. They have a decent military arsenal. They could and would wreak havoc on oil supply/transport in the region. Shiites in Iraq would probably side with their brethren across the border. At a time when our military is maxed out, there would have to be some sort of draft implemented. If not on the ground in Iran, in Iraq when the tenuous situation ignites.
In the event of all out war with Iran, I wouldn't be surprised to see oil top $300. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Israel eventually brought out the nukes against Iran. Ugh what a mess it would be. A mess I hope never happens... where are the cooler heads?

Don't worry, if the information came from our intelligence, it was most likely wrong :)
I would not be at the least bit surprised if the report is right on, it's very consistent with what has happened in the last 7 years.

Recent interview with Seymour Hersh:
http://rawstory.com/rawreplay/?p=1384
The stuff on covert war escalation inside Iran, as well as its political dynamic (congress providing funding without knowing any details about it), was very interesting. Maybe all the bluff and bluster in the media combined with supposed covert operations going on inside Iran is meant only to pressure and topple the gov't without actual shots fired. A risky game to play.
But all this from anonymous sources that noone but Mr Hersh seems to have.
