Adding a wireless router to a wired office
Can't Post
Any tips? I have a small office with several hard-wired workstations. I want to add a wireless router for a laptop. My configuration currently looks like this:
Cable Modem-----Router------8-port hub--------server/wrokstations.
Since the wireless router has 4 ethernet ports on the back of it should I not just be able to replace the router I have now with the wireless one and plug in the cable from the cable modem to the 'internet' plug on the new router then run a cable from the 'ehternet' port ont he new router to the 8-port hub? This way the office is still hard wired but the router now brodcasts wireless for the laptop(s) to pick up. I do this but when I do the laptop cannot find the new router and I lose the connections from my workstations (mabye the new router has a new dns or whatever number that I have to go to each workstation and change??)
Any tips?

Brand?
I presume that your new routers WAN ports is connected to the other routers or switches LAN ports...oh, and the SSID is not the same.

check the DHCP settings, if your server is running DHCP then you might have a conflict between the network settings on the router vs the server.

What if I want the laptop to be 'stand alone' and not to be able to access the server at all? I am really just trying to help someone out by getting them into a spare office that they can use for their own use. I was not going to let them access or get to the server or files etc...

First things first. Get it running with one wired workstation and then go from there.
Shut down the workstation, switch, router and modem.
Take the switch (hub) out for now, plug the workstation right into the new router. That will allow you to configure the router if necessary.
Turn the modem, router and workstation back on.
See if it works.
If not, try 192.168.1.1 on the workstation. That should bring you to the router admin page.
