90's music long term test
Can't Post
About a year ago I posted that I loaded up the pod with a large set of 90's. I was pretty busy for the decade of the 90's and wasn't tuned into the music scene much. Well suffuce it to say, in the mid-late 90's I found a lot of music I like a lot, some of it rivaling my favorite era of the 70's. Best bands for me are
Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Bush, Soundgarden, Counting Crows, Red Hot Chili Peppers
Bands I just can't get into for some reason - Pearl Jam, Creed, Alice in Chains, 9 Inch Nails
Highlights:
Tool - the precision of their musicianship, extemely unique sound
Rage - Rock/funk fusion like nobody else. Don't like many of the lyrics, but I like the anger if that makes any sense.
Smashing Pumpkins - unique vocals, great guitar riffs
Nirvana - Great inrospective lyrics, vocals going from quiet to a raging scream, great drumming
Anyway, the late 90's was a great era for music. Any other lesser known bands I should look into?

Anyway, the late 90's was a great era for music. Any other lesser known bands I should look into?
Walt Mink - Greatest band of the 90's imo...often compared to Smashing Pumpkins. "El Producto" is their best album.
Grant Lee Buffalo - My second favorite band of the 90's...great songwriting, singing, and production values on all their albums. "Mighty Joe Moon" is perfect.
Radiohead - An obvious choice. "The Bends" is classic 90's material.
Pavement - A definitive 90's band that I loved. "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain" is essential.
Swervedriver/Catherine Wheel/My Bloody Valentine - 3 brilliant shoegazing bands. Try "Mezcal Head", "Ferment", and "Loveless"
The Samples - A fantastic roadtrip band. "The Last Drag" and "No Room" are awesome.
The Jesus Lizard - Best live band...ever!!!! "Down" will kick your ass.
Built To Spill - Classic 90's guitar rock. "Perfect From Now On"
I could go on, but that's probably enough to get you started. Enjoy.

Based strictly off of your list, (kinda strange some of the bands you like and some that you don't) here's some 90's stuff you might like:
Helmet - I prefer
Meantime
, but
Betty
is probably the best intro
Faith No More - go with
The Real Thing
Stone Temple Pilots - probably
Purple
or
Core
Jane's Addiction
- Ritual De Lo Habitual
or
Nothing's Shocking
Pixies - possibly a little off-kilter for your taste, but check out
Doolittle
Foo Fighters - still current, but they put out good stuff in the 90's - their self-titled debut might be my favorite record of theirs
Sugar -
Copper Blue
or
File Under: Easy Listening
Temple of the Dog -
self titled; Chris Cornell from Soundgarden does most of the vocals
Others:
Afghan Whigs
Fishbone -
Give a Monkey a Brain
...or
Reality of My Surroundings
(has some funk, punk, and ska leanings which you may or may not appreciate)
Sunny Day Real Estate -
LP2
Should definitely be some stuff in there you like. I'm a bigger fan of some than others, but this is stuff from that era that should have some similarity to stuff you listed.

Some great stuff there but kinda in a different vein from most of the stuff he mentioned, isn't it?
Btw, big thumbs up on the Jesus Lizard, Built to Spill, Grant Lee Buffalo, and of course, Radiohead!

Beck,

Mellow Gold.
The Butthole Surfers,
Independent Worm Saloon
, a classic in every way. It's just a fantastic album start to finish. Also bits of
ElectricLarryland.
Particularly
Jingle of a dogs Collar,
My Brother's Wife
,
TV star
, and
Lets talk about Cars
.
Sky Cries Mary, songs;
Gone,
Broken Down
, Rosaleen
, from
A Return to the Inner Experience.
Good stuff right there man.

I find it interesting that you can't get into the ones you listed given the ones you like. Given there the same Genre and all. But yea, lots of good stuff from the 90's.
Some to check out if you haven't:
3 Days Grace
3 Doors Down
Nickleback
Faith no More
Barenaked Ladies
Janes Addiction
Korn
Metallica has some great stuff they put out in the 90's
Incubus
Black Label Society.....One of My Favorites Or Zak Wylde (Ozzy's Guitarist.....Great solo stuff)
Seven Mary Three
Goo Goo Dolls
Matchbox 20
Of course, most of these follow the same Genre......There are more I could list that have some popular songs but most of there stuff is unoticed unless you're into them like:
Gov't Mule
Sevendust
Machine head
Catherins Wheel
Buckethead
And you are right on about Tool.
My Two top picks would be Gov't Mule.....It's different and this is a band that you HAVE to see in concert and
Zak Wylde / Black Label Society

You know, supposedly that is the music that defined my generation (Gen X). There is not much about I have ever liked. Some of it I can listen to now, but honestly at the time, that music chased me to country and classic rock (60's and 70's).
I still like to listen to a lot of the stuff from the mid to late 80's.
Weird.

I would disagree with Counting Crows and Red hot chili peppers on your best bands
and Alice in chains and 9 inch nails on your bands you just cant get into. Pearl Jam has some good stuff and some stuff I dont care for.
As to what others have posted I will give you my 2 cents. Please keep in mind that I do not know you at all but here goes.
Faith no more is great, but I do not think you will get into them.
if you like Faith no more try "Peeping Tom" it is Faith no more's lead singer's new band. not 90's
Stone temple pilots. Really cannot go wrong with this. Start with the album "Core" if you like it try the band "velvet revolver"
Temple of the Dog. good stuff. I think if you give it a chance you will like it. Might take a couple of listens. As the previous poster mentioned original band members went on to form different very influential grunge bands.
Butthole surfers. Again could go either way. if you choose them give them a couple listens also. the "popular" songs are "Pepper" and "Who was in my room last night"
http://youtube.com/watch?v=g4WUlNSx_Wk
Nickleback Hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahhahahahahhhaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhahhhhhhhhhahhhhhhhhhhhhhhaha. Whoo, that was funny.
KoRn personal favorite, but for some reason I just do not see you liking them. Start with shoots and ladders, if you do not like that you probably wont like the band. I am not saying that is their best song though.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=3n89VHNPV0E
also
http://youtube.com/watch?v=K27d7Ut5bXo
Black Label Society Good band in my opinion but does not have mass apeal.
Sevendust. Another band that I find hit or miss. Black was increadible.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7O90WBpvlNk
New additions
deftones
L7
lots of people liked Oasis back then and I think you will too. I liked a couple of songs.
Oleander late 90's but I think you like them too.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=eQ3ei32FWy0
Offspring
if you liked KoRn try P.O.D. it is the Christian version of KoRn
Primus you will either love them or hate them.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=tQaxYbPf-Hc
Saigon Kick "Love is on the way" if your in a ballad mood or if not pretty much any other song off of the album "the lizard" i.e. "hostile youth" "body bags" "Pepperment tribe"
If your in a dark mood try the album "Darkest Days" by the band "Stabbing Westward"
"Garbage" Shirley Manson is HOT!
Again I do not know why but I do not see you liking them but Gwen Stefani's original band "No Doubt" was insanely popular back then.
Fiona Apple
Tori Amos
Pennywise if you want 90's punk
1 hit wonders "Crash Test Dummies" I do not know if you will like the band, but I am pretty sure you will like the song
http://youtube.com/watch?v=9q91_kcx3no
Cake. everyone likes CAKE!
No 90's list of music can be complete without mentioning Greenday.
By the way for the most part these are not necessarily bands that I think you will like based on your previous list but rather a comination of popular bands in the 90's and bands that I listened to in the 90's.
I think I just carbon dated myself with this list.
oh, yeah, if you like Tool check out A Perfect Circle. It was a band that Maynard (lead singer of Tool) sang for.
Since you like Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine check out Audioslave. Chris Cornell from Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine minus Zak De La Rocha.
Yeah that is all I got.

I'm not sure I saw it on anyone else's list, but Mad Season. Though, if you don't like Alice In Chains (which I think is CRAZY!)...
And to he who posted Nickleback, *barf*. Why must you people encourage them to make more music?

3 Days Grace - Shame on you.
3 Doors Down - Not a fan of talent are you.
Nickleback - This goes beyond bad taste. The worst band ever.
Faith no More - Genius! How can you listen to them and stomach Nickelback?
Barenaked Ladies - Underrated good times. Love those boys.
Janes Addiction - solid.
Korn - (Vomiting...can't talk)
Metallica has some great stuff they put out in the 90's - I can't think of the words.
Incubus - Cream-o-Wheat anyone?
Black Label Society.....One of My Favorites Or Zak Wylde (Ozzy's Guitarist.....Great solo stuff) - FUCK YEAH!
Seven Mary Three - Oh my balls!
Goo Goo Dolls - Aren't they dead?
Matchbox 20 - Yummy white noise! So bland as not to seem like music.
Of course, most of these follow the same Genre......There are more I could list that have some popular songs but most of there stuff is unoticed unless you're into them like:
Gov't Mule - HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Sevendust - Pointless.
Machine head - Never heard.
Catherins Wheel - Brilliant.
Buckethead - Love that guy!

Cliffs Notes for 90's grunge:
Since you don't like Pearl Jam, I'm not sure I can help you. Someone mentioned Temple of the Dog. If you like that, there's Mother Love Bone. Mudhoney may be a bit too much for you. I still love AIC as much as I did in college (a lot).
Other stuff I really like from the 90s (and still listen to):
Jeff Buckley
Mazzy Star
Tracy Bonham
The Sundays
Big Head Todd and the Monsters
Hole
PJ Harvey
Toad The Wet Sprocket
Filter
Tripping Daisy
The Eels
Semisonic
The Jesus and Mary Chain
And last (on this list) but not least by any means
RADIOHEAD
. Love the 90's albums, love the current In Rainbows. Thom York is a genius.

I'm seeing no love here for the most underrated band of the '90s - Blind Melon.
Tim, do yourself a favor and download (or watch on Youtube) the following: Tones of Home; Galaxy; Toes Across The Floor; Change; Soul One; Mouthfull of Cavities; Vernie; Soup; Skinned, and No Rain.

Overrated? Hell, they weren't even rated. They were written off as a one-hit wonder. No Rain is a good song, but far from their best work - and like most one-hit wonders, very unrepresentative of their body of work.
You're lucky it's your room, Tibbs. I'd have to banish you otherwise.

What is so great about Pearl Jam? I know they were great and all but what is it about them you like?
For me it is the sound of EV's voice I just don't care for. If you don't like the singer, it goes downhill in a hurry.

The Dennis Rodman influence I guess. They are ok, I don't want to sound like they suck, but they just don't click with me. I downloaded a lot of their songs and gave it a good listen.
You Know You're Right by Nirvana was probably my favorite song of this research project.
