As some of you know I had my first race this past weekend. I did the Loveland Lake to Lake Aquabike. It is actually the Loveland Lake to Lake Olympic Distance Triathlon, but since I injured myself earlier this year I did the aquabike. That means that I only did the swim and the bike. I did not run the 10K. For me it was a great race. I decided to put it all out there and see what would happen. I can't tell you how wonderful it felt to not have to run after the bike. I was able to push the bike race harder than I have ever done before. In all my years of triathlon I have only placed one time. But this past weekend with the aquabike, I was able to get 2nd place. That felt good. Maybe I have found my sport. I still love to run, but I am what you would call a challenged runner. I am usually one of the first out of the water (I used to be a pretty good competitive swimmer) and I have developed into a pretty fair cyclist. I just can't run too fast. I have flat feet and short legs--or at least that is my excuse :) The aquabike people started in the last wave so I literally had to swim through lots of waves of folks in front of me. I was 4th out of the water--well sorta. My only beef with the race was that to get to the transition area for the bike race I had to "run" about half a mile. I was literally praying that my calf wouldn't give me trouble during this short run. I was actually passed by other folks with the same swim cap color on this "run" due to my slowness at running. And then the bike course was none other than spectacular. A great ride through some very scenic roads. I rode hard. Only one person passed me (the guy who won). He was a strong bike rider. And since we started at the back of the pack I went by a lot of folks. That felt good--though most of them were doing the full triathlon so I can't take too much satisfaction in passing them since they had to reserve some energy for the run that I didn't. I took my gps on the bike race and thought you might be interested in the data, so here it is below: The race atmosphere was great and it was a well run race. Great job Peggy! I hope you all have a great 4th of July.
