Endurance Nation Long Course Training Manual
Can't Post
Hi,
Today we have published the
Endurance Nation Long Course Training Manual, aka, The Book.
This is a 135 page, complete brain dump of everything we know about coaching long course age groupers...and it's FREE online. It's also available as a .pdf for $19 or a hardcopy book for $25. Please visit the link above, give it a thorough read and let us know what you think. If you dig it, please share the link with as many people as you like.
Next week Patrick and I will begin to publish a weekly podcast where we dig into the subject matter of each chapter in more detail. Please subscribe to the
EN Blog
to receive updates.
<snip, from the landing page>
Why is The Book Free Online?
We learned a very powerful lesson when we started Endurance Nation just about a year ago: giving means getting. By putting all of our information and coaching knowledge into a single, online platform, and allowing athletes to interact, share, give feedback, make updates...our stuff got better. The Book is our way of trying to infect the rest of the tri-community with the knowledge and openness that has made Endurance Nation a leading force in the triathlon game.
Our Message
The Book
is how we coach our Team. No secrets, no outrageous monthly coaching fees. Our
training plans
are proven. These are
the results
we get. Try to find a better value for your coaching dollar. You can't. Since you can't beat our combination of results, value, or quality...

Introduction
Welcome to the Endurance Nation approach to long-course triathlon training! What you find here may surprise you. At EN, we have spent years reviewing training-related research, studying and coaching athletes of all abilities, and training and racing ourselves—all of which has led us to the conclusion that the dominant training theories flooding the Internet, books and magazines are not always the most sound. As well, we realize that our athletes have lives outside of racing and can’t always follow inflexible and mileage-heavy training protocols year-round. So, get ready to sit back and be “wowed” by a new way of training—EN-style—that offers proven results and helps you balance the various demands in your life.
Fitness = Doing Cool Stuff!
Aiming for a really big goal is always inspiring at first. But, since we are human, the realities of preparing for even the most amazing of challenges can become mundane at some point.
In your quest for that finish line—and as you work to get it done day after day—we encourage you to remember that you are creating a vehicle for doing cool stuff. Don't lose sight of the fact that the fitness, confidence, skills, and self-knowledge you are developing on the path to your race can be applied to many other areas of your life.
But First, A Word from Your Coaches…
After six plus years of coaching, we’ve developed a unique perspective of what it means to compete at the Ironman distance. Since the modern world offers very few physical challenges that truly test our mettle, many athletes use the finish line as a way to transform their lives. And in terms of a physical and mental challenge, triathlon—specifically Ironman—is widely recognized as the real deal.
And so the journey begins—laden with training schedules, training zones, gear, gadgets, and how-to books. So much to learn, so much to get done, and only 24 hours in a day! And suddenly they have truly changed—as 95% of our athletes do—they reach the point where fitness ceases to be something they do and becomes what they are. They begin to live fitness as a lifestyle.
As your coaches, we would like to begin our journey together by sharing with you the vision we have for you at that finish line. To hear more about our perspective on the sport, please visit the
Beginner Triathlete Project
and listen to the Podcast.
- Coach Patrick & Coach Rich
Next Up…
This manual is packed with comprehensive, detailed and highly-valuable information to help you plan for and execute your next long-course race. We want to make sure you find the information that is applicable to you, depending on your level of experience both as an athlete and EN member. To help guide you, we suggest the following: ways to work through it all, depending on your experience level.
If you are a beginner or new EN athlete: We strongly suggest you first read these two sections so that you understand why our approach to training is different and why it works. If you skip these sections, you may risk not having the information you need to truly “get on-board” with our program: •
Exercise Physiology & The EN Approach
•
Long-Course Overview
If you are an advanced athlete: If you are already familiar with the EN paradigm—you can probably skip directly to
Long-Course Training—Strategy & Execution
and then work your way into the following sections from there in a linear fashion. However, if you want to review the science and philosophy behind our approach, check out the links above.
<end text>
Thanks for reading and I look forward to your feedback. Remember, please share the online version of The Book with your friends and training partners!

Thanks for the good words. The .pdf was going to be free until our wives and webmaster smacked us around and told us we'd be leaving money on the table. So far today, quite a few have purchased the ebook (thanks!) so that was a good call. Something for the effort.
We've been working on this for a long, long time and "we" are truly in this resource. We've learned a lot in the past year as we've transition from 1:1 to team coaching, hacked our way through the coaching and business model, etc. Like I said, we will record a series of podcasts to accompany each chapter and we're also lining up an interview with a smart gal in the biz space to talk to us about what we've learned through the transition.
Anyway, s'all good. If you dig it, share it :-)

Thanks for the resource. As a grad student struggling for funds it is great when people give back to the sport. I hope to be in that position in the future. Thanks again.

Yeah. I don't get that one either. If the post isn't selling something, why should it be in the classifieds?

Thanks for the reminder Rich. I've scanned a lot of The Book and it's really good stuff. And free is always nice!

Thanks for sharing, I read all of it yesterday in one sitting. There is a lot of wisdom contained in it for the vast majority of IM participants. I particularly like the section on run training, need to be able to train the pace you intend to race. In a way its the pace dedicating the hrt
Now couple your book with BSuttons pearls of wisdom, most AG should be able to figure out a simple basic plan that will work.

Thanks. To refine your point regarding pace, we believe you earn the right to run faster on race day by making yourself faster through training. Duh...However, most of our athletes are training with or tracking their paces, VDot scores. Just as if you had power you'd never ride the bike of an FTP of 300 if your FTP was 270w, you'd never run the pace of a 50 VDot if your VDot were only 45.
So, you might intend to run 9:00 pace on race day, and you've done the training to earn it, but in the end if you only have the VDot to support 9:15's, that's what you run. Period.
